Free Smoke Alarms for Gaston County Residents

In partnership with the Gaston County Firefighters Association, the Tryonota Fire Department is proud to offer FREE smoke alarms to Gaston County residents in need.

If your home does not have a working smoke alarm, you may be eligible to receive one at no cost.

⚠️ Please note: This program is intended for owner-occupied homes. Rental properties are NOT eligible, as landlords are legally required to install and maintain working smoke alarms.

However, if you are a tenant and need assistance, we’re happy to help you and your landlord take the necessary steps to ensure your home is fire-safe.

🔥 Smoke Alarm Facts & Safety Tips 🔥

🚨 Why Smoke Alarms Matter:

  • Over 3,000 people die each year in U.S. residential fires—most from smoke or toxic gases, not flames.
  • Homes without smoke alarms have a fire death rate over twice as high as those with working alarms.
  • Early warning saves lives. Smoke alarms give you precious time to escape.

🏠 Installation Tips:

  • Install alarms:
    • In every bedroom
    • Outside each sleeping area
    • On every level, including the basement
  • Interconnect alarms when possible: if one sounds, they all do.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement—smoke rises, so mount alarms high on walls or ceilings.

🔧 Maintenance Checklist:

  • 🔘 Test monthly by pressing the test button.
  • 🔋 Replace batteries yearly—or immediately if you hear a “chirp”.
  • 🕒 Replace all alarms every 10 years, or sooner if malfunctioning.
  • ✅ Ensure alarms are certified by a recognized testing lab.

🔍 Choosing the Right Alarm:

  • 🔥 Ionization alarms respond better to flaming fires.
  • 💨 Photoelectric alarms respond better to smoldering fires.
  • ✅ For best protection, install both types or a dual-sensor alarm.
  • 😴 Consider alarms with recordable voice alerts to help wake children.
  • 🦻 For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, use alarms with strobe lights or vibration devices.

🍳 Dealing with Nuisance Alarms:

  • Install a photoelectric alarm or an ionization alarm with a hush button if located near a kitchen.
  • A hush button temporarily silences nuisance alarms from steam or cooking smoke.
